PULASKI, Tenn. (11/12) - For seven consecutive season, Martin Methodist women's soccer has won the regular season conference championship, and captured their seventh-straight TSAC tournament championship on Friday night with a 1-0 win over the Scots.
Following the match, the RedHawks swept TranSouth year-end awards with Anna Becerra (Freshman/Richland Hills, Texas) as Freshman of the Year, Simone Souza (Senior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) earning Player of the Year, and Gerry Cleary named as Coach of the Year.
The RedHawks scored early, and were able to hold off an aggressive Lyon squad late in the game for the win. In the 13th minute, Daniel Sofer (Sophomore/Hadera, Israel) took a corner kick into a Lyon defender, recovered and crossed right in front of the net where Player of the Year, Souza, was waiting to head in the eventual difference-maker.
With the win, MMC will earn a chance to play in the NAIA National Tournament. The opening round will be played at selected sites, and the winners of those games will earn a trip to Decatur, Alabama for the remainder of the tournament.
