HATTIESBURG, Miss. – In a matchup of two of the premier teams in the NAIA, No. 9 Martin Methodist suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to No. 10 William Carey (Miss.) University in double-overtime at Crusader Field Friday afternoon.
In a rematch of last year's thrilling double-overtime RedHawk victory at the East Campus, the RedHawks (9-2-1, 5-1 SSAC) and Crusaders appeared destined for a 1-1 draw before the Crusaders scored their second penalty kick of the night to claim the one-goal victory.
After a scoreless first half, the RedHawks fell behind 1-0 early in the second half when the first of two penalty kicks were awarded and converted by Emmaleigh Davis.
Lauren Badalamente tied the match just moments later, however, blasting a shot into the back of the net after a pass from RedHawk defender Makenna Lehrman in the 52nd minute.
The match would remain scoreless for the next 50-plus minutes before the Crusaders were awarded their second penalty – this time with just over five minutes left in double overtime.
In a tightly-contested affair, the RedHawks held a narrow 15-12 shot advantage, while also claiming a commanding 9-4 edge in the shots on goal department.
RedHawk goalkeeper Aisling Dyer made both of her saves in the first half in net for the RedHawks, who allowed two goals in a contest for just the second time this season. The loss also marked the first road defeat for the RedHawks in over a calendar year, with the last loss coming at Auburn-Montgomery on Aug. 31, 2012.
The RedHawks will have a quick turnaround as they travel to Belhaven (Miss.) University for a Saturday afternoon showdown against the Blazers.
Kickoff in tomorrow's match is set for 5 p.m. in Jackson, Miss.
