Women's Soccer: RedHawks to Tangle with Warriors in NAIA's Second Round

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – The 10th-seeded Martin Methodist Women's Soccer team will continue its quest for the program's third-ever national title when it squares off against No. 7-seed Westmont (Calif.) College Tuesday afternoon at the 2014 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship, presented by the Sports Medicine Center at Orthopedic Group, P.C. at the Orange Beach Sportsplex.

The RedHawks (13-5-1) advanced to the tournament's Round of 16 after they claimed a 1-0 victory over Oklahoma Baptist University at the East Campus Soccer Complex and Grissom Pitch in the tournament's Opening Round on Nov. 22.

As result, the RedHawks earned a matchup against a familiar foe in the form of the seventh-seeded Warriors (16-3). Tuesday's showdown marks the fourth-ever meeting between the NAIA powers, with Westmont holding a 2-0-1 edge in the all-time series.

Westmont dispatched Ottawa (Kan.) with a 5-0 victory in Santa Barbara in their Opening Round matchup.

Revenge will be on the mind of the RedHawks in Tuesday's matchup as the Warriors mounted a last-second, come-from-behind 2-1 overtime victory at the Lindsey Wilson Classic in Columbia, Kentucky on Sept. 4.

The RedHawks will also seek payback against the Warriors, who eliminated the RedHawks with a 2-0 win in the Round of 16 a year ago.

Tuesday's matchup also marks a clash between two of the NAIA's all-time best as the Warriors have made 17 Round of 16 trips while the RedHawks have advanced to the second round 11 straight seasons. The Warriors lead the NAIA with five national championships, while the RedHawks own a pair of titles themselves, including the program's first-ever championship in 2005 with a penalty kick shootout win over the Warriors in Olathe, Kansas.

THE MATCHUP

Martin Methodist enters Tuesday's matchup with Westmont with just two victories in their last five contests, but three of the RedHawks losses came against foes that were ranked in the NAIA's Top 10 – two of which were ranked in the Top 3.

Westmont enters Tuesday's showdown on a nine-match win streak, including four victories over Top 25 clubs and three wins over foes that were in the NAIA's Top 10.

Offensively, the RedHawks enter their Round of 16 match having scored 46 goals on the season – a mark that ranks 40th in the NAIA this season.

Southern States Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year Caroline Ladaga da Silva leads the RedHawks with 11 goals, including the match-winner in the victory over Oklahoma Baptist to send the RedHawks to Orange Beach. The Rio de Janeiro, Brazil native also registered a team-best eight assists for a total of 30 points in her 19 appearances.

Defensively, however, the RedHawks are among the NAIA's best this season, having conceded just 13 goals in their 19 contests. 11 of the RedHawk contests were clean sheets, including a 110-minute shutout effort at then-No. 3 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) College on Sept. 19.

RedHawk goalkeeper Jhani Williams enters Tuesday's contest on the heels of arguably the best performance in her two-year RedHawk career. The senior stopped all six shots she faced in the RedHawks win over Oklahoma Baptist to register her sixth shutout of the season and her second clean sheet in her last three contests. On the year, Williams has stopped 47 shots faced in over 1,300 minutes of action.

Westmont, meanwhile, ranks as one of the top offensive sides in the NAIA this year, scoring a total of 57 goals in their 19 matchups – a mark that ranks 18th in the nation.

And while the Warriors do not feature a goalscorer with as many tallies as Ladaga da Silva, they do possess balanced firepower as five players have scored five or more goals on the season. Sophomore midfielder Brooke Lillywhite led the Warriors with nine goals on the year, including a pair in their Opening Round win.

Defensively, the Warriors have conceded 15 goals on the year, but one-third of those were surrendered in the club's 5-0 defeat to The Masters (Calif.) College on Sept. 27.

In net, junior Lauren Dorr has seen most of the action for the Warriors this season, playing nearly 1,500 minutes while conceding just 13 goals and making 37 saves.

RedHawks head coach Tyson John enters Tuesday's match with a 10-4 postseason record since arriving at Martin Methodist in 2011. The fourth-year head coach sports a 3-3 overall record in the NAIA national tournament.

Warriors head coach Kristi Kiely is in her fifth season at the helm of the program, having guided the Warriors to a national tournament runner-up finish a year ago.

Kickoff in Tuesday's contest is set for 1:30 p.m. at the Orange Beach Sportsplex.
