ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – Katie Reid chipped a shot home in the 21st minute and the defense did the rest as the No. 10-seed Martin Methodist Women's Soccer team scored a 1-0 upset over No. 7-seed Westmont (Calif.) College Tuesday afternoon in the NAIA national tournament's Round of 16 at the Orange Beach Sportsplex.
The win lifted the RedHawks (14-5-1) to their first national tournament quarterfinal appearance since 2011 and gave the squad its first-ever victory over longtime nemesis Westmont, which boasted a 2-0-1 edge over the RedHawks prior to Tuesday's contest.
In a matchup of two of the NAIA's top defensive sides, the RedHawks turned in arguably their best defensive effort of the season as they limited the Warriors (16-4) to just six shots on the afternoon -- none of which were on target.
The RedHawk attack, meanwhile, was not required to do much, but came through big with a goal from Reid – her first since netting a pair in the club's 4-0 win over Faulkner (Ala.) University in the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament opener in Pulaski on Nov. 11.
The goal, which marked Reid's first-ever tally against a ranked opponent, was a masterclass effort as the freshman intercepted an errant Warrior pass, dribbled toward the left-side of the 18-yard box and lofted a chip shot well over diving Warrior goalkeeper Lauren Dorr.
The outcome of the goal was so apparent, Reid immediately raced back to the RedHawk dugout, where she was mobbed by teammates and the RedHawk coaching staff before the ball finally trickled across the line with a defender not within 40 feet.
"Katie's goal was an absolute thing of beauty," RedHawks head coach Tyson John said. "We had been working on her goal-scoring all season and knew she was capable of producing in big moments. She could not have picked a better time for a breakthrough. We are so proud of her."
And while Reid's goal will certainly get most of the credit, the RedHawk defense turned in arguably its best game of the season as they limited a Warrior club that averaged 9.6 shots on goal per game to nary a single shot on target.
"I could not be more proud of our ladies," John said. "Westmont is a tremendous team. Everyone that is left in this tournament is very, very good. We needed a near-perfect effort from everyone on the field and we got just that. We are thrilled to be moving on to the quarterfinals."
The RedHawks will meet No. 15 seed Northwood (Fla.) University in their quarterfinal matchup on Wednesday. The Seahawks (16-5-2) stunned No. 2 seed William Carey (Miss.), 3-0 in their Round of 16 contest on Tuesday.
Wednesday's showdown marks the third-ever meeting between the two clubs, with the RedHawks holding a 2-0 advantage. In the last-ever meeting between the two sides, the RedHawks claimed a 3-0 victory in the Round of 16 national tournament in Decatur, Alabama.
"Northwood are an extremely dangerous side as we saw today," John said. "They have an extremely dangerous offensive attack and they play sound defense as well. They knocked off a very quality William Carey bunch today. We will need another terrific effort from our girls to get past them."
Kickoff in Wednesday's quarterfinal is set for 4 p.m. at the Orange Beach Sportsplex.
