RedHawks Best Rams in Top 10 Battle

MOBILE, Ala. – In a showdown of two of the premier programs in the NAIA, the No. 1 ranked Martin Methodist Women's Soccer team bested No. 10 University of Mobile (Ala.), 2-0, Wednesday afternoon.

Freshman midfielder Miku Sunaga notched a goal in both the first and second half in the win for the RedHawks, (15-0, 5-0 SSAC) their third win over a Top 10 foe this season.

The RedHawks took control of the contest just four minutes in when Riko Sagara linked with Sunaga to put the visitors ahead with the early goal. Sagara worked her way past a Mobile defender, whipped a left-footed through ball to Sunaga, who curled it home for the goal.

The RedHawks posted seven shots in the first half, but allowed seven shots to the home side as well.

The second half saw more tense moments as goalkeeper Caitlin Dumond was forced to make several key saves to keep the lead in favor of the RedHawks.

But Sagara and Sunaga linked together once more – this time in the 71st minute – to put the RedHawks ahead by a pair and ultimately secure the win.

The win was a strong one for the RedHawks, who have beaten three Top 10 opponents this season, all of which have been on the road or at a neutral site.

The win marked the third in the RedHawks last four trips to Mobile and the shutout marked the first home shutout for the Rams since an Oct. 31, 2015 loss to then-No. 3 William Carey (Miss.) University.

"Mobile is a very quality side every single year," RedHawks head coach Will Austin said. "For us to go on the road and grab a win in such a tough place to play is huge. We did not play our best by any stretch today, but we are delighted with a strong victory. We have another very strong test upcoming this weekend and we look forward to a big challenge against William Carey on Saturday."

The RedHawks return to action on Saturday when they host No. 4 William Carey (Miss.) University. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. at Grissom Pitch.
