Cabral Sets NAIA Season Goals Record

PULASKI, Tenn.Millene Cabral became the NAIA's single-season scoring champ with three first-half goals and the No. 1 Martin Methodist Women's Soccer team cruised to an 11-0 victory over Brewton-Parker (Ga.) College in the quarterfinals of the SSAC Women's Soccer Championship, presented by Newk's Eatery, Saturday afternoon at Grissom Pitch.

Two goals shy of tying the national mark, Cabral notched a goal just five minutes into the match to pull within striking distance of the record. 11 minutes later, Cabral would tie the mark with a 16th minute goal that put the home side ahead by a 6-0 margin.

Then, in the 35th minute, Cabral achieved the record as her shot scooted into the bottom right corner the net for the historical mark. The 49 tallies are one more than the previous mark, achieved by Patience Avre of Robert Morris (Ill.) in 2002.

In addition, Cabral's 86 career goals are the most in school history with Shannon Walter's 63 goals from 2006-2009 believed to be the previous program record.

Midfielder Riko Sagara, who set the NAIA's single-season assist record with 31 helpers added three more in Saturday's runaway victory.

Cabral and Sagara were honored for their achievements during a ceremony at halftime of the contest.

Ashlyn Wiggins opened the scoring in Saturday's win with her first career goal. The freshman skied for a corner kick and nodded one home in the match's 4th minute.

Emily McNeil , Frankie Quadrini and Abbie Madden also notched their first goals in a RedHawk uniform. McNeil scored a rocket shot in the 29th minute and Quadrini added two more in the 43rd and 73rd minutes. Madden capped the scoring for the RedHawks (18-1) with a goal in the 75th minute.

The lopsided margin allowed the RedHawks to not only rest starters but give valuable postseason minutes to their reserves.

Freshman goalkeeper Miriam McLaren saw 75 minutes of work in relief of starter Caitlin Dumond. Neither goalkeeper was required to make a save, however, as the RedHawks held the Barons (0-14-1) without a shot all afternoon.

With the win, the RedHawks advanced to their fifth straight SSAC semifinal since they joined the league in 2013.

The top-seeded RedHawks will meet No. 5 seed Bethel (Tenn.) University, which stunned No. 4 seed Middle Georgia State, 2-1, in its quarterfinal matchup Friday afternoon.

The contest is a rematch of the final regular-season game between the conference rivals. The RedHawks defeated the Lady Wildcats (12-5) by a 7-2 margin in the meeting at Grissom Pitch on Oct. 28.

Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 8 at the Emory Folmar YMCA Soccer Complex in Montgomery, Alabama.
