RedHawks Fall to No. 2 Crusaders

Box Score

PULASKI, Tenn. – In a matchup of national powerhouse programs, the No. 4 Martin Methodist Women's Soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss to No. 2 William Carey (Miss.) Thursday night at Grissom Pitch.

The contest marked the first loss of the season for the RedHawks (11-1-1, 4-1 SSAC), who surrendered a goal just a minute into the contest. Senior forward Shantel Thompson curled a shot into the upper left corner of the net just 63 seconds in for the game's opening goal.

Throughout the next 44 minutes, the RedHawks had several scoring chances, but were unable to convert and saw themselves trailing by the lone tally at the half.

The game played back-and-forth in the opening moments of the second half, with the Crusaders (12-1, 5-0) forced to deny a few more RedHawk scoring opportunities.

But, in the 57th minute, the visitors struck for another goal and effectively sealed the contest.

Caitlin Dumond, the three-time SSAC Defensive Player of the Week, helped limit the damage for the RedHawks as she matched her career-high 14 saves set earlier this season.

The loss snapped a 13-match regular-season unbeaten streak for the RedHawks, dating back to a 1-0 loss to William Carey back on Oct. 21, 2017.

The RedHawks return to action this Saturday, Oct. 13, when they host No. 13 University of Mobile (Ala.). The match will be part of a busy day at East Campus as the RedHawks welcome old friends, family, and alumni for Alumni Weekend 2018.

Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. at Grissom Pitch.
