RedHawks Run Away from Rams in Second Half

Box Score

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Martin Methodist Women's Soccer team conceded early but answered with straight goals in a 4-1 victory versus University of Mobile (Ala.) Wednesday afternoon in the semifinal of the SSAC Women's Soccer Championship.

After a significant weather delay forced the match to a later time and adjacent field, the RedHawks (17-1-1) finally took the pitch at the Emory Folmar YMCA Soccer Complex.

The lengthy delay led to frustration for the RedHawks after kickoff as well, as the Rams (12-7) notched a goal just nine minutes into the contest.

Down a goal and playing in adverse conditions, the RedHawks picked themselves up off the deck as Miku Sunaga struck for a pair of goals in rapid succession to pull the higher seed ahead. Sunaga capitalized on the wet conditions to pop free and strike for a goal in the 13th minute and another in the 16th minute.

The 2-1 scoreline would hold up throughout the first half as the RedHawks and Rams combined for six shots each in the first half.

The second half would tip further in favor of the RedHawks, as Freshman of the Year Natsuna Sugishita connected on a 74th-minute goal on an assist from fellow freshman Mackenzie Stroebel.

Freshman Lily Fisk put the match to bed in the 87th minute when she corralled a pass from Sunaga and tucked it home on the left side of the goal for the RedHawks.

The win sets up a rematch of last year's SSAC title match versus William Carey (Miss.). The teams will meet Friday afternoon at 4 p.m.

The Crusaders (15-2) earned the top seed in the eight-team tournament and defeated fourth seed Middle Georgia State, 6-1, in their Wednesday semifinal match.
