Box Score PULASKI, Tenn. – Down a goal at halftime and down to 10 players for the final half hour, the No. 5 Martin Methodist Women's Soccer team gutted out a 2-2 draw versus No. 23 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) Wednesday night.
In their stiffest test of the season, the RedHawks (5-0-1) fell behind after a 34th minute goal from the visiting Blue Raiders (2-1). Despite being outshot by a 12-4 margin in the first half, the RedHawks were able to claw their way into the halftime break trailing by just the one goal.
And in the second half, the RedHawks capitalized on their attacking breaks with a pair of quick header goals from sophomore forward Miku Sunaga.
After early back-and-forth play did not a produce a goal for either side, a ball trickled out of play for a corner for the RedHawks. Freshman midfielder Suzuho Yamasaki sent a pass floating in front of goal where Sunaga latched onto it for the equalizer.
Sunaga and the RedHawks barely had time to celebrate as the sophomore delivered a go-ahead goal just 68 seconds later. This time, freshman midfielder Natsuna Sugishita delivered the service on a header goal for Sunaga to give the RedHawks their first lead of the night.
Unfortunately for the RedHawks, the lead would not last, as the Blue Raiders struck for an equalizer of their own in the 69th minute on a goal from senior striker and NCAA Division I transfer Yvonne Ploeg.
The RedHawks tried to claw back in front, but an abrupt red card to forward Millene Cabral in the 80th minute saw the game change in a hurry.
From there, the RedHawks retreated and were forced to defend for the final 30 minutes of the contest, with limited scoring chances coming in regulation or either overtime period.
Junior goalkeeper Caitlin Dumond delivered a career night as she stopped 14-of-16 shots on target from the Blue Raiders. Dumond, the reigning SSAC Defensive Player of the Week, also stopped a first-half penalty kick that could have potentially blown the game open in favor of the Blue Raiders.
The draw was the first regular-season deadlock for the RedHawks since an Oct. 13, 2016 clash versus University of Mobile (Ala.) also resulted in a 2-2 tie.
The draw also put the all-time series between the two longtime NAIA powerhouses at 7-7-4.
Martin Methodist returns to action this Sunday, Sept. 16 for a matchup versus another Mid-South Conference foe, Georgetown (Ky.). The RedHawks defeated the Tigers, 2-0, last season at Grissom Pitch.
Kickoff in Sunday's contest is set for Noon CT in Georgetown, Kentucky.
