RedHawks Outlast No. 5 LWC on Road

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

COLUMBIA, Ky. – The No. 9 Martin Methodist Women's Soccer team exploded for four goals in the first half and hung on for a 4-3 victory at No. 5 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) Saturday night.

After playing two matches last week at the Lindsey Wilson Classic, the RedHawks (5-1-1) made their third trip to Columbia, Kentucky in less than 10 days as they took on the Blue Raiders (4-2-1) in an NAIA Top 10 showdown.

The RedHawks saw adversity on both ends of the contest, as they surrendered a goal just 11 minutes into the contest to fall behind 1-0. Then, leading 4-1, the RedHawks had to fight the home squad away from possibly tying the contest in the closing moments. The Blue Raiders struck for a goal in the 55th minute, and added another in the 85th to put the pressure back on the RedHawks.

But on a night where the RedHawks were outshot 23-16, they stood tall defensively in the final five minutes to see out the 4-3 victory.

The RedHawks utilized three different goalscorers in the victory, with Yuki Watari notching goals in the 15th and 38th minutes to bookend the scoring for the RedHawks. Adisa Amang and Natsuna Sugishita sandwiched goals in between the efforts from Watari.

Gabby Kennedy allowed three goals, but made six saves to collect the victory in net.

The win improved the RedHawks to 8-6-4 in the rivalry versus the NAIA powerhouse programs, dating back to 2005. The win marked a second-straight road victory versus the Blue Raiders, after the RedHawks cruised to a 4-1 win on Aug. 26, 2017.

The Kentucky road trip continues for the RedHawks on Sunday, as they travel to Georgetown, Kentucky for a showdown versus the Tigers (4-4).

Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. CT.
