Firehawks Fall at Dalton State in Road Matchup

UT Southern Responds with a Goal From Daquan Duhaney But Falls 3-1 on the Road

DALTON, Ga. – The UT Southern men's soccer team battled Dalton State College on Friday evening, but a three-goal burst by the Roadrunners early in the second half proved to be the difference in a 3-1 Southern States Athletic Conference contest.

The Firehawks move to 8-6-1 overall and 4-6 in conference play, while Dalton State improved to 9-4-3 overall and 6-3-1 in the SSAC.

UT Southern had an opportunity to grab the early advantage in the 13th minute when Filippo Fregoli earned a penalty kick. However, the Roadrunner goalkeeper came up with the save to keep the match scoreless.

The Firehawks continued to battle defensively throughout the opening half, with Wilmer Jonsson making several key stops to help send the teams into halftime tied at 0-0.

Dalton State seized momentum immediately after the break, scoring just 39 seconds into the second half before adding two more goals within the next four minutes to take a 3-0 lead.

UT Southern continued to fight and found a response midway through the second half.

In the 68th minute, Felix Hammel delivered a pass to Daquan Duhaney, who finished his second goal of the season to cut the deficit to 3-1.

The Firehawks pushed for additional chances over the final 20 minutes. Lorick Gustave forced a save in the 80th minute, while Ezer Binoy tested the goalkeeper late as UT Southern looked to mount a comeback.

Dalton State ultimately held on, despite a determined effort from the Firehawks down the stretch.

Jonsson and Hunter McGourty combined for six saves in goal, helping keep UT Southern within striking distance throughout the contest. Duhaney's goal provided the lone offensive highlight as the Firehawks continued to battle until the final whistle.
