Seventh-Seed Firehawks Shock No. 2 Life, Advance to SSAC Semifinals

Lorick Gustave's Second-Half Strike and a Shutout Defensive Effort send UT Southern to Montgomery

MARIETTA, Ga. – Seventh-seeded UT Southern delivered one of the biggest wins in program history Thursday evening, upsetting second-seeded and No. 2 nationally ranked Life University 1-0 in the Southern States Athletic Conference Quarterfinals.

The victory sends the Firehawks to the SSAC Semifinals and marks another historic postseason accomplishment for the program. UT Southern becomes the lowest seed to advance to the conference semifinals since 2015, when eighth-seeded Auburn Montgomery defeated top-seeded Mobile, 5-3, on Nov. 6 to earn a trip to Montgomery.

The win also marks the second time in the past two seasons that the Firehawks have eliminated the Runnin' Eagles from SSAC Championship contention, continuing a remarkable stretch of postseason success against one of the conference's premier programs.

Life entered the match ranked No. 2 in the nation and unbeaten in conference play, but the Firehawks matched the Runnin' Eagles from the opening whistle.

UT Southern generated several quality scoring chances during the first half and consistently challenged the Life back line. Jinto Kanagase, Christian Sentz, Felix Hammel, and Lorick Gustave all helped create offensive opportunities as the Firehawks recorded eight first-half shots.

Neither team was able to find a breakthrough before halftime, sending the match into the break scoreless.

The decisive moment came five minutes into the second half.

In the 50th minute, Lorick Gustave found the back of the net for his sixth goal of the season, giving UT Southern a 1-0 lead and providing what would ultimately stand as the match-winning goal.

From there, the Firehawks turned in one of their best defensive performances of the season.

Life pushed forward in search of an equalizer and finished with 20 shots on the evening, but UT Southern's back line remained organized and disciplined throughout the final 40 minutes.

Goalkeeper William McGinn was outstanding in net, recording six saves and preserving the clean sheet against one of the NAIA's most dangerous attacking teams. His efforts, combined with a relentless defensive performance in front of him, helped keep the Runnin' Eagles off the scoreboard for the full 90 minutes.

UT Southern also continued to threaten offensively, forcing the Life goalkeeper into multiple saves and preventing the home side from fully committing numbers forward.

When the final whistle sounded, the Firehawks had completed one of the biggest upsets in the conference this season and punched their ticket to Montgomery.
