PULASKI, Tenn. – The UT Southern men's soccer team put its unbeaten record on the line Tuesday evening and came away with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against No. 6 Cumberland University at Grissom Pitch.
The Firehawks moved to 5-0-1 on the season, while the nationally-ranked Phoenix left Pulaski with a 5-0-2 record. The result marked the third shutout of the season for UT Southern and extended the Firehawks' unbeaten start through six matches.
In a matchup between two of the NAIA's hottest teams, neither side was able to break through despite several quality opportunities throughout the match.
UT Southern carried much of the attacking play, outshooting Cumberland 13-8 and earning a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks. The Firehawks generated their best chances midway through the opening half, forcing multiple corner kicks in succession and testing the Phoenix defense with several efforts in front of goal.
The closest look for UT Southern came in the 30th minute when George Grice put a shot on frame, but Cumberland goalkeeper Pau Gelabert came up with the save to keep the match scoreless.
Defensively, the Firehawks matched the intensity of one of the nation's top-ranked programs. William McGinn made two saves in goal and helped organize a back line that limited Cumberland to just two shots on target all evening.
The Phoenix pressed late, earning three second-half corner kicks and creating opportunities around the box, but the Firehawks held firm. McGinn's save in the 72nd minute preserved the shutout and helped UT Southern secure the draw against a top-10 opponent.
David Danquah led the Firehawks with three shots, while Devonte Allen recorded two attempts. UT Southern consistently pressured the Cumberland defense throughout the contest and earned a valuable result against one of the NAIA's premier programs.
