Shizuya Kubo, a native of Tokyo, Japan, begins his first season as the full-time Assistant Tennis Coach for the men's and women's tennis programs at the University of Tennessee Southern during the 2026-27 academic year. A former standout student-athlete for the program, Kubo brings valuable experience, leadership, and a deep understanding of the culture and tradition of Firehawk Tennis.
Kubo began his collegiate career as a Martin Methodist College Redhawk and remained with the program through its transition to the University of Tennessee Southern. During his four-year playing career, he was a fixture in the starting lineup in both singles and doubles competition, earning recognition for his work ethic, dedication, and leadership. His athletic achievements included receiving the Southern States Athletic Conference Champion of Character Award and earning Mid-South Conference Second Team All-Conference honors in consecutive seasons.
As a student-athlete, Kubo played an integral role in laying the foundation for the success of the current UT Southern men's tennis program. His commitment to excellence, dedication to the process, and quiet leadership helped establish many of the core values that continue to define the team's culture today.
Beyond the collegiate level, Kubo has spent the past three years serving as a coach for TEAM SOUTHERN at the Impact Team Tennis Junior Nationals, a prestigious national junior tennis tournament founded by Billie Jean King. In that role, he has helped guide and mentor emerging junior players while providing valuable experience in high-level team competition.
Kubo is also active in the local tennis community as a certified Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) instructor, offering private and group lessons to players of all ages and skill levels. His passion for teaching and player development has allowed him to make a positive impact both on and off the court.
A 2025 graduate of the University of Tennessee Southern, Kubo earned his bachelor's degree in Business Management. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, he serves as a part-time manager at the UT Southern cafeteria. His leadership and commitment to service were recently recognized with the "We Embrace Change" Award from Zest Culinary Services.
Kubo's diverse experiences as a student-athlete, mentor, instructor, and campus leader position him to make an immediate impact as he begins his coaching career with the Firehawks in 2026-27.
