LEBANON, Tenn. - Martin Methodist volleyball struggled over the weekend with tough competition, falling in four sets to Trevecca Nazarene, and suffering sweeps to Campbellsville University and Lindsey Wilson College in their first three matches. MMC bounced back with a three set sweep of Kentucky Christian on Saturday afternoon before returning home.
Dropping the first set against TNU, 25-13, MMC retaliated with an extra-point 27-25 win over the Trojans. The RedHawks again brought pressure in the third set, but narrowly fell 25-23, and TNU used their momentum to take the last set 25-14. Precious Sanders earned her first triple-double of the season with 15 kills, 12 assists, and 19 digs, while Paulo Sioto tallied a double-double on 11 kills and 26 helpers. Ann-Katherin Kuehorn recorded 16 digs, adding eight kills, while Ya Zhao led the defense at the net with four blocks.
The RedHawks were swept in the next match by Campbellsville (25-14, 25-18, 26-24), without a single player registering double-digit kills. Ulirike Gebhardt led with seven kills, and Sanders handed out 11 helpers.
Opening day two of the Cumberland University Classic with Lindsey Wilson College, MMC fell in three (25-15, 25-12, 25-17). Sioto and Zhao each turned in a team-high five kills, and Sioto with 11 assists led the setting duties. Sandra Stojimirovic had a team-high 10 digs, followed by Sioto with seven.
Determined not to end the weekend with a loss, the RedHawks brought home a victory against Kentucky Christian during their last match of the weekend, sweeping the match by three identical set scores (25-22, 25-22, 25-22). Sanders recorded 14 kills and 12 digs, combined with Sioto's 18 assists.
MMC hosts Trevecca Nazarene on Tuesday, September 13th before heading to open conference action at Mid-Continent University on Thursday, September 15th.
