MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The men's soccer team opened their 2011 campaign with a road win at neutral site Christian Brothers University, downing Thomas University (Ga.) by a 2-1 score. MMC notched their first win under head coach Gerry Cleary, as he made his men's soccer coaching debut.
MMC quickly took control of the match, firing off four shots, three on goal, in the first 13 minutes. The RedHawks then jumped on the board at 18:51, as newcomer Benji Ciosanki netted his first collegiate goal from Niklas Larsson.
Taking the 1-0 lead to the half, the RedHawks would strike again in the second period. At 69:37, Brett Hurst entered to provide spark off the bench, and it only took him five minutes to utilize a pass from Ciosanki, and rip a second MMC goal at 74:35, Hurst's first of the year.
Despite a late goal from Thomas University, with under 10 minutes to go, MMC held on to the 2-1 lead to collect the win. RedHawk keeper Stephen Lunney earned the win in the goal, tallying four saves on the day in his 90 minutes.
MMC's match with Tennessee Wesleyan scheduled for Tuesday, September 6th has been cancelled due to inclement weather. They are scheduled to take on Reinhardt University on the road on Saturday, September 10th to continue a near month-long road stand.
