PULASKI, Tenn. – Less than 24 hours after dropping a heartbreaking five-set contest, the Martin Methodist Volleyball team returned to action Saturday afternoon with a convincing 3-1 victory over Belhaven (Miss.) University in the Curry Christian Life Center.
Seeking their second conference victory of the season, the RedHawks (2-2, 2-5 SSAC) got off to a quick start as they claimed the first set, 25-13. The Blazers (0-2, 6-5) would respond for a 25-18 victory in the second set to draw level and possibly cause reason for concern on the RedHawk bench.
There would be no further reason for concern, however, as the RedHawks surged ahead with a 25-18 victory in the third set to claim a 2-1 advantage.
In the fourth and ultimately final set, the RedHawks went back-and-forth with the Blazers before finally pulling ahead midway through the frame and claiming a 25-14 edge and their second SSAC victory of the year.
The victory was made somewhat sweeter as the RedHawks erased the memory of a heartbreaking five-set loss to Faulkner (Ala.) University Friday night.
"I am so proud of the way our ladies fought back after such an emotional game last night," RedHawks head coach Alison Williams said. "They delivered a great bounce-back effort and turned in some of their best play of the season this afternoon."
Rosmerli Carrillo led the RedHawk attack with 17 kills on her 32 attempts for a .375 attack percentage. Gloria Watson also notched double-digit kills as she recorded 13 finishes on 24 total attempts for a .33 attack percentage.
Domynique Kloss anchored the RedHawk defense as she turned in 15 of the team's 49 digs. Ashley James and Mariana Campos added nine and seven digs apiece in the victory.
The RedHawks return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 16 when they host conference rival Bethel (Tenn.) University. First serve in Tuesday's contest is set for 7 p.m. in the Curry Christian Life Center.
