PULASKI, Tenn. – The Martin Methodist Volleyball team opened its 2016 home schedule with a 3-1 victory over Middle Georgia State College Thursday night in the Curry Christian Life Center.
The win lifted the RedHawks (5-8, 3-2 SSAC) to their first home opener victory since the 2012 season and pushed the club above .500 in SSAC play. The win marked a third straight in league play for the RedHawks, who defeated Brenau (Ga.) University and Dalton State (Ga.) College on the road last weekend.
The first and second sets proved rather easy for the RedHawks, who won the frames by 25-13 and 25-17 margins, respectively. The third period saw a back-and-forth spell of play as the Knights (6-9, 1-5) were able to eek out a 26-24 decision. The fourth and final frame, however, saw the RedHawks claim a 26-24 win and the overall victory.
Seniors Genesis Mejias and Belen Albertos Ascensio led the RedHawks with 25 total kills on 61 combined attacks. Junior Chakia Hinkle added eight kills on 18 attempts in the victory for the RedHawks.
Defensively, the RedHawks combined for 48 digs – 12 of which came from Albertos Ascensio. Sophomores Hayley Brisendine and Samantha Davenport added nine and seven defensive digs apiece.
The RedHawks return to action on Friday night when they host Brewton-Parker (Ga.) College. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in the Curry Christian Life Center.
