RedHawks Sweep Weekend, Earn SSAC Awards

PULASKI, Tenn. – The Martin Methodist Volleyball team picked up three victories over the weekend in a tri-match held in the Curry Christian Life Center and matched the program's most victories in a season since 2010.

In addition, two members of the squad earned weekly Southern States Athletic Conference Player of the Week awards.

On Friday, the RedHawks (14-4, 4-1 SSAC) made quick work of Loyola (La.) University with a 3-0 victory to begin the weekend.

The RedHawks followed up with additional straight-set sweeps on Saturday of William Carey (Miss.) University and Trinity International (Ill.) University.

With the wins, the RedHawks matched their win total (14) from a season ago. The next RedHawk victory will mark the most in a season since the squad won 17 contests in 2010.

For their efforts individually last week, RedHawk outside hitter Sabrie Sirmones and sophomore setter Sydney Arnold were named SSAC Attacker and Setter of the Week, respectively, on Monday afternoon.

Sirmones picked up her second weekly award as the junior hit a blistering .439 and totaled 54 kills (4.15 k/s), 15 digs (1.15 d/s) and eight blocks. She posted double-digit kills in each match, including 20 kills and six digs v. William Carey and now averages 4.3 kills per set in conference play.

Arnold totaled 143 assists and 26 digs on the week. The sophomore posted 30-plus assists in every match, including 39 assists and 10 digs v. William Carey.

Martin Methodist returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 3, for a huge SSAC showdown at Bethel (Tenn.) University. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in McKenzie, Tennessee.
