RedHawks Fall in OT to No. 1 William Carey

Box Score

PULASKI, Tenn. – The Martin Methodist Men's Soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss to No. 1 William Carey (Miss.) University Saturday afternoon at Grissom Pitch.

The contest was a tight one as the RedHawks (9-6, 2-4 SSAC) stood toe-to-toe with the top-ranked Crusaders (14-0, 6-0 SSAC), who are the last unbeaten team in the NAIA.

After a back-and-forth start, the visitors seized control of the contest with a 23rd minute goal off the foot of James Cooper.

Despite a flurry toward the end of the period from the RedHawks, the contest remained a one-goal outing into the halftime break.

The second half saw the RedHawks take control as they broke for a goal in the 64th minute. Mario Lopez rifled home a shot from the right side of the box after a buildup from Juan Yepes and Jack McCarren. Lopez took the pass on the right side from McCarren and laced a shot into the left side of the net to tie the contest.

Level at 1-1, the RedHawks and Crusaders both had chances in the remaining 20-plus minutes, but remained deadlocked as the whistle sounded for the end of regulation.

In their third overtime contest of the season, the RedHawks were snakebitten on Saturday as the Crusaders scored just three minutes into the first period of extra play to earn the road victory.

For the contest, the Crusaders held a narrow 15-13 edge in shots. The RedHawks produced just one shot on target, but it was from Lopez on his equalizer in the second half.

RedHawk goalkeeper Naoya Fugono made five saves against the seven Crusader shots on frame.

The RedHawks will look to close the regular season on a high note on Saturday, Oct. 28, when they host Bethel (Tenn.) University. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Grissom Pitch.

The RedHawks will celebrate Senior Night festivities at halftime of the Women's Soccer contest versus Bethel at roughly 2:30 p.m.
