RedHawks Open Year With Three Victories

MARIETTA, Ga. -- The Martin Methodist College Volleyball team opened the 2017 season this past weekend at the Running Eagles Classic in Marietta, Georgia. The Redhawks finished the weekend with a 3-1 record, with all three victories completed as sweeps.

MMC def. Brenau 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-19)
In tbeir opening match of the 2017 season the RedHawk offense hit at a .200 clip in the match, with several players contributing. Sabrie Sirmones led with 10 kills, Lauren Martin and Brittney Pepitone added 7 a piece, and Jade Paris had six kills and no errors, hitting .400 on the match. Sydney Arnold had 30 assists and Belen Albertos Acensio anchored the defense with 17 digs.

MMC def. Bluefield (25-19, 26-24, 25-15)
In their second match of the day, the RedHawks started off each set slowly, having to come from behind each time. But the offense held strong in sets one and three, with Sabrie Sirmones (12 kills, .310) and Sophia Paes (12 kills, .214) setting the tone from the pins. Lauren Martin also added 9 kills and hit .214. Sydney Arnold kept the pace of the offense going with 27 assists. Belen Albertos Asencio had another 17 dig match, with Sydney Arnold and Katelyn Wear adding 12 and 10, respectively.

MMC v. IU East (23-25, 20-25, 23-25)
On day two of the Running Eagles Classic, the RedHawks started off the first match struggling mentally and suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of the Red Wolves. The offense had difficulty clicking, but saw leaders in Sabrie Sirmones and Jade Paris who had eight and seven kills each. Sydney Arnold had another 27 assist match and Belen Albertos Asencio had an impressive high of 21 digs.

MMC def. Ave Maria (25-22, 25-23, 25-15)
The RedHawks ended the weekend on another sweep, with multiple players contributing to the victory. Sophia Paes had an impressive 13 kills and hit .300 on the match. The outsides Sabrie Sirmones and Lauren Martin added eight and six kills apiece. The RedHawks ran a 2 setter offense with Sydney Arnold and Jessie Privett combining for 29 assists. Belen Albertos Asencio had another 17 dig match.
