PULASKI, Tenn. – Three players finished in double-figures and two more scorers ended the night with eight points as the Martin Methodist Men's Basketball team picked up its first win of 2018 with a 68-62 victory over Brescia (Ky.) University Tuesday night in the Curry Christian Life Center.
The RedHawks (2-12) found themselves ahead by 11 points at halftime, but had to withstand a late Brescia flurry to pick up the victory.
The RedHawks saw the visitors go on a 21-9 run in the opening stages of the second half to tie the contest at 46-46 with just under 12 minutes left to play. The RedHawks even fell behind late in the contest as they trailed 57-55 with 5:02 left in the ballgame.
But clutch rebounding and offensive efficiency down the stretch fueled the RedHawks to victory in their first contest of the new year.
Freshman forward JJ Jones helped spark the victory as he connected on three straight field goal attempts with just under five minutes to play that helped the RedHawks build a four-point lead. Jones also grabbed a defensive rebound down the stretch and blocked a Brescia desperation 3-pointer with under 20 seconds left in the contest.
Jones finished the night with 10 points on a 4-of-6 effort from the floor.
Two other RedHawks flanked Jones in the double-digit scoring column as junior guard Jordan Olison and fellow junior guard Van Johnson added 11 points apiece for the RedHawks. Junior guard Javonte Cooper finished the night with eight points.
Senior forward Will Smith added seven points and a team-best four assists on the night, including a pair of consecutive dishes to Jones down the stretch.
Junior forward Chike Augustine finished with eight points and tracked down a team-best 10 rebounds.
Guards Jordan Copper-Livers and Tavon Johnson finished with 18 points each to lead the Bearcats (2-11). As a team, Brescia shot just 37 percent from the floor while the RedHawks connected at a 52 percent clip.
The win was a much needed one for the RedHawks in their final non-conference matchup of the season. The RedHawks begin the grind of their remaining 15 Southern States Athletic Conference games this week when they travel to William Carey (Miss.) University and Blue Mountain (Miss.) College.
Tipoff in Thursday's contest versus William Carey is set for 7:30 p.m. in Hattiesburg, Mississippi with Saturday's contest versus Blue Mountain is set for a 4 p.m. tipoff.
