RedHawks Outlast No. 24 Phoenix in OT

Box Score

PULASKI, Tenn.Jonas Arcalean converted a penalty kick with just over two minutes remaining in the second overtime as the Martin Methodist Men's Soccer team downed No. 24 Cumberland (Tenn.), 4-3, Tuesday night at Grissom Pitch.

The win snapped a three-match losing skid for the RedHawks (2-4) and marked their first win versus a ranked opponent this season.

In a wild, back-and-forth affair, the RedHawks struck for the game's final goal thanks to Arcalean's finish – his third of the night – for his first career hat trick.

The contest started with a bang as the Phoenix (0-2-2) opened the scoring just 7:46 into the contest.

However, a pair of RedHawk goals – just 68 seconds apart – gave the RedHawks a 2-1 advantage after just 14 minutes.

The action would continue throughout the first half as the visitors struck for two more goals to seize a 3-2 lead at halftime intermission.

As the RedHawks enjoyed a second-half advantage in possession, the much-needed equalizer took several minutes to develop.

But, in the 59th minute, Arcalean notched his second goal of the contest to draw the teams level at three goals apiece.

As the match went to overtime, the Phoenix began the first extra period with a few deep throw ins, but steady RedHawk defending allowed the home side to head into the second overtime.

In the final extra period, the RedHawks worked their way into the box as substitute Juan Yepes made a run into the penalty area and drew the foul.

Cumberland defender Jonathan Walderstrom was shown a second yellow card – and subsequent red card – as the RedHawks prepared for a potential game-winning kick.

And, for Arcalean's first-ever hat trick, the sophomore stepped up and buried a ball into the bottom right corner for the overtime victory.

Alex Kleczkowski had the other goal for the RedHawks on the evening.

With the win, the RedHawks improved to 9-3-1 all-time versus the Phoenix, and snapped a three-match winless streak in the series.

Martin Methodist returns to action this Saturday, Sept. 15, when it hosts SCAD-Savannah (Ga.).

Kickoff is scheduled for Noon at Grissom Pitch, with pregame tailgating festivities scheduled as Martin Methodist celebrates Family Day 2018.
