RedHawks Fall in Quarterfinals

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Despite a last-gasp comeback attempt, the No. 3 seed Martin Methodist Women's Basketball team suffered a 68-62 upset loss to No. 6 seed Stillman (Ala.) Thursday morning in the SSAC Women's Basketball Championship quarterfinals at the Cramton Bowl.

In a contest that featured four ties and four lead changes, the RedHawks (19-12) outscored the Tigers (16-13) by two points, 17-15, at the end of the first quarter. The RedHawks won the second quarter battle as well, and took a 30-26 lead into halftime.

The third quarter saw the Tigers storm back, however, as they outscored the RedHawks by a 24-13 margin. The Tigers tied the contest at 37-37 with 5:41 left in the period and outscored the RedHawks 13-6 over the final five-plus minutes to take a seven-point lead into the fourth quarter.

The fourth frame saw the RedHawks fall behind by as many as 12, but the RedHawks mounted a final rally in the last minute.

Trailing by seven with 45 seconds remaining, the RedHawks connected on a 3-pointer and promptly stole the inbound pass and swished home an ensuing layup to pull within two.

The Tigers connected on 1-of-2 free throw attempts on the trip to the line, but a last-gasp RedHawk 3-pointer rattled off the iron and secured the win for the Tigers.

Faith Sherrow, who was named Second Team All-Conference and All-Freshman team at the league's annual awards banquet Wednesday night, finished with 19 points – eight of which came at the free throw line.

Brooklyn Blanchard, who garnered First Team All-SSAC honors, flanked Sherrow with 12 points. Blanchard also handed out eight assists in the defeat.

Destiney Williams also scored 12 points in the loss for the RedHawks, who will now await a possible at-large berth to the NAIA Women's Basketball National Championship, which will unveil its 32-team field during a selection show on Wednesday, March 6.
