Box Score ATHENS, Tenn. – Nawn Thang scored twice in the second half, but the Martin Methodist Men's Soccer team suffered a tough-luck 3-2 loss at Tennessee Wesleyan Tuesday afternoon.
The RedHawks (1-1) started slow and were only able to register one shot in the first half. But the squad caught their offensive rhythm in the second half when Thang scored just 22 seconds into the second frame.
The Bulldogs (3-1) answered to tie the contest some eight minutes later on a headed effort from a corner kick.
Tied 1-1, the RedHawks again turned to Thang, who broke past a Bulldog defender in the 77th minute to tap a goal home and give the RedHawks their second lead of the day.
The home side would rally once more, however, as the Bulldogs earned a free kick just outside the right side of their box. A floating cross eventually was headed home as the Bulldogs drew level at 2-2 with just over 10 minutes left in the contest.
And while the RedHawks saw several attacking chances go begging, the home side capitalized on its effort with a one-two finish with just 4:29 left in the match.
RedHawk forward Mario Lopez fired a last-gasp blast, but a Bulldog defender blocked the attempt and allowed the home team to preserve the comeback victory.
The goals were the first of Thang's career as the midfielder subbed on midway through the first half and never departed.
Lopez, the reigning SSAC Offensive Player of the Week, delivered the service on Thang's second goal, which marked the second assist in as many games for Lopez.
The RedHawks return home for their next match, which takes place this Saturday, Aug. 31, versus Marian (Ind.). Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Grissom Pitch in Pulaski.
