Firehawks Ground Eagles with Fourth Quarter Comeback

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -  The University of Tennessee Southern women's basketball team opened Southern States Athletic Conference play tonight in the Gump against Faulkner. UTS clipped the Eagles 66-61 to improve to 2-1, (1-0) on the year. This was the first conference win for the Firehawks in the Ross James era.
Ashley Dickey led all scorers with 28 points. Daysha Reid added 23 points and 11 rebounds. Reid shot 10-17 for 59 percent from the floor in 32 minutes of play.
UTS trailed 17-14 after the opening 10 minutes. Both teams scored 15 points each as Faulkner led 32-29 at the break.
The final quarter of play was a tale of two five minute segments. To start the period, the Eagles led by three, and extended their lead to 59-49 with four and a half minutes left. The Firehawks found their second wind and closed out the quarter with an impressive 17-2 run to end the game. The final run by the Firehawks included 10 points by Dickey, Reid contributed four, and Silkiari Vazquez-Troche pitched in three. During this time, the Firehawk defense held the Eagles to one of four from the field and forced five turnovers.

The Firehawks will return to the Curry Athletic Complex to host William Carey in a Saturday matinee beginning at noon.
