Bell, Jr. Sets a New Career High at UTS with 31 points, Firehawks Upend No. 18 Rams in SSAC Showdown

PULASKI, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern men's basketball played their last home game until January 2nd, hosting the #18 University of Mobile on Saturday. The Firehawks upset the Rams 98-91. The teams will square off again on February 6th.
UTS took the early 6-0 lead on a pair of long range shots by Mike Bell, Jr. and Vito Vujovic. The Firehawks continued the long distance onslaught with two more triples from Bell, Jr. and a 15 footer by Mark Vance. At the under 12 media timeout, UT Southern led #18 Mobile 25-15. UTS led 46-33 at the break with their largest lead coming at the 8:34 in the half at 34-18. The Firehawks lit up the nets shooting 18-32 (56 percent) from the field including 7-11 (64 percent) from downtown. At  the break, Bell, Jr. led all scorers with 15 points. Koby Isaac added 13 points, and Vujovic tossed in 12.
In the second half, UTS continued to pull away from the Rams working out to their largest lead in the game with 10 minutes left besting the #18 Rams by 21 points. In the final 10 minutes, the Rams began to chip away from the Firehawk lead. Mobile hit nine of 16 from distance in the half to close the gap to five with one minute left. The Firehawks put the game away hitting seven of eight trips to the free throw line down the stretch.
Four Firehawks scored in double figures with Bell, Jr. leading all scorers with 31 points and five assists. Vujovic added 26 points and eight rebounds. Isaac added three second half points to finish with 16. Mark Vance scored six in each half as well.

BY THE NUMBERS
36 – The Firehawks scored 36 points in the paint to Mobile's 28.
3 – UTS cleaned the glass pulling down 27 rebounds, three more than UM.
21 – UTS picked up 21 assists, six more than the Rams.
55.9 – The Firehawks heated up the CAC shooting 55.9 percent (33-59) from the field.
57.1 – UT Southern was hot from the court square, hitting 12-21 (57.1 percent) from three-point land.

NEXT UP
The Firehawks will return to action on December 14th, traveling to McKenzie, Tenn., to battle rival Bethel University. Tipoff is set for two p.m.
