Firehawks Split Tri-Match with Mobile and Fisk

PULASKI, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern volleyball team welcomed Mobile and Fisk to the CAC for a tri-match on Saturday. The Firehawks were swept by the Rams in Southern States Atheltic Conference action and dismissed the Bulldogs in straight sets to finish the day 1-1. Mobile swept Fisk in the middle match of the day.
UT SOUTHERN VS MOBILE
UT Southern (3-6, 1-2) lost the opening 13 points as UM cruised to a first set win. The Firehawks were plagued by numerous attack errors that allowed the Rams to pull away and take set two and three. UTS hit -.042 for the match recording 16 kills on 95 swings with 16 errors.

UT SOUTHERN VS FISK
In the first meeting a couple of weeks ago, Fisk took UT Southern to five sets winning 3-2 in the Freed-Hardeman Invitational. Today the Firehawks swept the Bulldogs to even the season series.
In the opening set, the Firehawks ignited for a 14-9 lead powered by six kills with several Bulldog errors. UTS took the 1-0 lead, scoring 11 of the last 15 points. In the second set, UTS and Fisk passed the lead back and forth through the entire set. There would be nine ties with the last deadlock at 18 each. UTS began to slightly pull away to be one set away from the win. In the final set, Fisk started out with a 5-0 lead before Tennessee Southern would run five points of their own. Down the stretch this set would be closer than the previous one with each point increasing the anticipation of a Firehawk win. UTS would work out to a 23-20 lead when Fisk called their final timeout. The final four points would be split between the squads with the match ending on a Bulldog service error.

NEXT UP
The Firehawks will travel to Nashville, Tenn., to battle NCAA DI Tennessee State in an exhibition on Tuesday, September 17th. The first serve between the Firehawks and Tigers is scheduled for six p.m. The next SSAC game for the Firehawks will be Friday, September 20th, vs Blue Mountain Christian.
