UT Southern Falls 85–76 to Columbia International in THE SHOW Finale

Firehawks Fight Back Late but Second-Half Runs Proved Decisive in Kingsport

KINGSPORT, Tenn. – UT Southern closed its trip to THE SHOW with a tough 85–76 loss to Columbia International on Saturday. The Firehawks battled through swings and produced several big moments — including a late push that got them within single digits — but an extended mid-second-half run by Columbia International created the separation UTS could not overcome.

The game opened with UT Southern working to find an early rhythm. After an initial lull, UT Southern settled in around its guards and wings: Antonio Cochran hit multiple threes in the first half to keep the Firehawks within reach, and Luke Lentz's corner triple at the 0:28 mark of the first half cut the deficit to 33–38 before Columbia closed the period on a late score, sending UTS to the locker room down 33–40.

UT Southern came out of the break swinging. De'Marreon Baldwin opened the second half with a baseline jumper and Ryan Dunn's activity on the perimeter and glass (including a made 3 at 8:52 of the first half that sparked earlier momentum) helped fuel a stretch in which the Firehawks reined in the game. Cochran buried a second-half 3 to trim the margin, and Lentz kept attacking the rim and spotting up from deep — his make at 6:47 of the second half sparked a late surge that pulled UT Southern back within striking distance.

Around the midway point of the second half the momentum shifted the other way. Columbia put together a long scoring run, and UT Southern's offense went through a sequence of empty possessions. The Firehawks answered with late pushes — Jack Harper finished a hustle play and Kiah Key knocked down a timely triple with about three minutes remaining — but the earlier swing left too much to do. Luke Lentz canned another three and added a layup in the final two minutes, and Ryan Dunn hit free throws in the final minute, but the comeback effort fell short as time expired.

Key contributors for UT Southern

Antonio Cochran — 16 points, 6 rebounds (5 fouls/minutes as shown in the box)
Luke Lentz — 20 points (4-of-13 from three), key late scoring off the bench
Ryan Dunn — 13 points, 5 assists, multiple hustle plays on the perimeter and boards
Mike Bell, Jr. — 8 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists (played 29 minutes)
De'Marreon Baldwin — 7 points, 5 rebounds (provided early offense and a few second-chance plays)
Kiah Key — 6 points (timely three and offensive rebound minutes)

Team notes from the official summary: UT Southern finished with 27-of-67 shooting (40.3%) and made 11-of-34 from three; the club totaled 31 rebounds and recorded 18 assists. Bench scoring was a bright spot, and the Firehawks pressured the ball well at times but were hurt by a handful of long opponent runs in the second half.

UT Southern (5–5) returns home to the Curry Athletic Complex and will host William Carey on Thursday, December 4, at 7:30 p.m.
