Firehawks Stay Perfect with Dominant Win Over Oakwood

Vazquez-Troche Records Second Career Triple-Double as Firehawks Roll Past Oakwood

PULASKI, Tenn. – The UT Southern women's basketball team improved to 3–0 on the season with a commanding 93–74 victory over Oakwood on Tuesday night inside the Curry Athletic Complex. The Firehawks built an early lead behind an explosive offensive start and never looked back, wrapping up a complete team effort at both ends of the floor.
UT Southern came out firing on all cylinders as Ashley Dickey buried a three-pointer to open the scoring for the Firehawks. The senior guard followed with back-to-back layups, both set up by Silkiari Vazquez-Troche, giving UTS a quick 7–2 lead and forcing an early timeout. Moments later, Ramie Reid converted an and-one opportunity, and Lauren Smith added a layup to cap a 15–2 run. Oakwood found some rhythm late, but Mia Jones hit a three from the corner to help UT Southern close the quarter ahead 26–21.
The Firehawks continued to attack the paint with confidence as Reid and Smith combined for early baskets around the rim. Vazquez-Troche kept the offense flowing, dishing out assists in transition, while Marypaz Martinez provided energy off the bench. Dickey and Smith each converted from the free-throw line to keep the lead intact, and the Firehawks went into the half ahead 47–36.
UT Southern put the game out of reach with a dominant third frame, shooting nearly 65 percent from the field. Vazquez-Troche opened with a pair of layups, then Reid added two more inside to stretch the lead to 55–39. Smith knocked down a three from the top of the arc, and Taya Totten followed with another triple moments later to make it 62–41. Dickey and Reid continued to capitalize on fast-break opportunities, and by the end of the quarter the Firehawks had built a 74–56 advantage.
Vazquez-Troche put the finishing touches on her stellar performance with another layup and mid-range jumper early in the fourth. Totten drilled a deep three, and Emma Bryant added a late triple to seal the win. The Firehawks' balance and defensive intensity kept Oakwood from threatening down the stretch, closing out the 93–74 victory.
