Buckner's Blast Forces Extras, Firehawks Fall to Phoenix in 10

PULASKI, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern baseball team returned to the diamond at Bobby Walker Field on Tuesday hosting Cumberland University. The nine-inning affair was originally scheduled for Tuesday, February 11, but the rain in the forecast postponed the match until today. UTS fell in extra innings 12-8 to their former MSC rival. UTS moved to 6-6 on the year.
After CU took the lead in the first, Mason Billions launched a three run homer scoring Collin Perkins and Cannon Raby. UTS led 3-1 after one.
Both teams scored again in the second. The Phoenix tied the game in the top half, but Cole Barnett hit a solo shot and Perkins put one in play driving in Devin Buckhalter to give the Firehawks the lead again.
In the sixth and seventh, CU plated fifth inning to lead 8-5.
Down to their final out, UTS tied the game to send it to extras. Brayden Buckner smacked a three run homer scoring Gattis Henley and Perkins.
CU would add four in the 10th inning to defeat the Firehawks.
Caiden Rodgers got the start tossing two innings. He allowed three earned runs and one hit. Weston Horton hurled a pair of scoreless innings allowing two hits. Hunter Hancock allowed one hit, and Danton Rinehart allowed two earned runs on two hits. Jake Stuteville worked two innings allowing three runs on five hits. Austin Uptain tossed one inning allowing one hit. Cooper Bailey (0-1) took the loss allowing one run on two hits.Jackson Moon allowed three runs in the final frame on two hits.
 
NEXT UP
The Firehawks will travel to Montgomery, Ala., this weekend for a SSAC series with #18 Faulkner beginning on Friday, February 21. First pitch is set for six p.m.
