FAYETTE, Mo. - The University of Tennessee Southern softball team continued the journey for a "Red Banner" facing the top seed #8 LSU-Alexandria Generals in a rematch from game three on Monday. The Firehawks never trailed in the game, taking the early 1-0 lead in the second but put the game on ice with a six run eighth winning 7-3. UTS improved to 33-20 on the year and advanced to take on undefeated second seed #11 Central Methodist.
GAME SEVEN: UTS 7, #8LSUA 3 (8)
The Firehawks scored in the second to take the lead.
Lauren Pettie singled down the left field line driving in
Alyssa Mosley. UTS led 1-0.
The Generals tied the game at one each in fourth.
In the eighth, the Firehawks exploded for six runs. Pettie started the run blitz reaching on a fielder's choice that allowed Mosley to score on a LSUA error.
Kassidy Davis doubled to deep center field scoring
Haley McDaniel and
Hanna Hill.
Mikayla McCain's sacrifice fly to left scored Pettie.
Carley Cook added two more runs on her double to right field. Cook's hit scored
Marie Bodily and Davis. UTS led 7-1, heading to the home half of the eighth. LSUA plated two but ran out of outs.
Ella Singletary (16-8) tossed 7.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits.
Stella Gilbreath (Sv. 1) notched the save in three pitches.
GAME EIGHT: #11CMU 5, UTS 1
The Eagles scored first in the opening frame.
The Firehawks tied the game in the top of the fourth on a Davis single to right that scored Pettie. In the home half, CMU retook the lead on a two run homer as the Firehawks trailed 3-1 after four innings.
UTS would leave runners on the base paths in the sixth and would fall two more runs behind on another Eagle round tripper.
Gilbreath (10-13) took the complete game loss. She allowed five earned runs on eight hits and struck out five CMU batters.
