HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The No. 16 University of Tennessee Southern women's soccer team faced a tall task Thursday evening, traveling to take on No. 3 William Carey in the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Game of the Week. Despite a strong effort, the Firehawks fell 8-1, with senior forward Millie Rayner providing the team's highlight with a first-half goal.
William Carey opened the scoring in the 12th and 23rd minutes to take an early advantage. UT Southern responded quickly in the 25th minute, when Rayner finished off an assist from Karla Montiel to record her fifth goal of the season. The Crusaders regained control with two more goals before halftime and carried the momentum into the second half, adding four additional goals to close out the match.
Goalkeeper Stephanie Hodgson recorded four saves across 75 minutes of play before being relieved by Abby Guy late in the match. UT Southern registered five total shots, with three on frame, while William Carey created 26 opportunities in the contest.
