BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – UT Southern Women's Tennis faced an unusual twin-match day Friday against Western Kentucky University at the Warren County Tennis Facility, as arctic weather conditions forced a schedule adjustment.
Originally slated to play an indoor match against WKU and an outdoor contest versus Kentucky Wesleyan University, the extreme cold led to the postponement of the Kentucky Wesleyan match. In its place, UT Southern and WKU agreed to play a second match later in the day.
Match One
Western Kentucky claimed a 7-0 victory in the opening match of the day. UT Southern competed across all three doubles courts, with Sheyla Zombrano and Natalia Vergara at No. 1, Sofi Rueda and Maya Balle at No. 2, and Agota Juozapaviciute paired with Sienna Ruberto at No. 3 doubles.
Singles play featured Zombrano at the top spot, followed by Vergara, Balle, Rueda, Juozapaviciute, and Ruberto. The Firehawks continued to gain valuable experience competing against Division I opposition throughout the lineup.
Match Two
In the afternoon rematch, WKU again earned a 7-0 decision. UT Southern opened doubles play with Rueda and Balle at No. 1 and Juozapaviciute and Ruberto at No. 2. The No. 3 doubles team of Sydney Kentish and Maggie Barnett was in a tight contest before the match went unfinished.
Singles action saw Vergara, Balle, Rueda, Barnett, Kentish, and Ana Sofia Olano take the court as UT Southern wrapped up the twin-match day against the Hilltoppers.
UT Southern will be back in action on February 7, when the Firehawks face Brescia University, Kentucky Wesleyan University, and Oakland City University.
