KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 6 University of Tennessee Southern men's cross country team continued its historic 2026 season Friday with a third-place finish at the Appalachian Challenge, hosted by Tennessee Wesleyan at Sequoyah Park.
Competing against one of the deepest NAIA fields of the season, the Firehawks finished third with 74 points, trailing only top-ranked Cumberlands and No. 8 Milligan. UT Southern finished ahead of nationally respected programs including Rio Grande, Montreat, Indiana Kokomo, St. Thomas (Fla.), Reinhardt, and Southeastern.
The result came one week after the Firehawks climbed into a tie for No. 6 in the NAIA Men's Cross Country Coaches' Poll, matching the highest national ranking in program history.
Sophomore Frankline Kipruto once again led the way, capturing the individual championship in a loaded field featuring several of the NAIA's top runners. The Eldoret, Kenya native crossed the finish line in 23:33.4, averaging 4:44.3 per mile, edging Cumberlands' Luca Madeo by less than half a second.
The victory marked another signature performance in a season that has already seen Kipruto earn multiple conference honors, set school records, and establish himself as one of the top runners in the NAIA.
Senior Spencer Head joined Kipruto among the race leaders, placing sixth overall in 24:08.5 as the Firehawks placed two runners inside the top six.
UT Southern's depth continued to shine throughout the remainder of the lineup. Junior Bruno Villazon finished 22nd overall in 24:52.0, while sophomore Martin Van Hamme crossed the line immediately behind him in 23rd with a time of 24:53.0.
Junior Amon Rotich completed the Firehawks' scoring five with a 31st-place finish in 25:12.8, giving UT Southern five runners among the top 31 finishers in a field loaded with nationally ranked competition.
Freshman Davide Ambruschi added a strong performance with a time of 25:42.8, while sophomore Luca Neumeister finished in 26:03.5.
The Firehawks recorded a team average of 24:31, finishing just behind Milligan despite posting a faster cumulative team time than the Buffs. UT Southern's front-running strength was evident throughout the race, as the Firehawks placed four runners among the top 23 finishers and seven among the top 64.
Friday's performance provided another strong test ahead of championship season and further demonstrated that UT Southern belongs among the nation's elite programs. The Firehawks battled two top-10 teams throughout the meet and continued to build momentum heading into the postseason.
With another podium finish secured, UT Southern now turns its attention to the Southern States Athletic Conference Championship on Nov. 6 in Clinton, Mississippi, where the Firehawks will look to add a conference title to an already historic season.
