CORDOVA, Tenn. – The No. 10 University of Tennessee Southern men's cross country team delivered another historic performance Saturday at the Christian Brothers University Invitational, placing third in a talented field highlighted by NCAA Division I programs Arkansas State and UT Martin.
The Firehawks finished with 53 points, just four points behind second-place UT Martin and ahead of Montevallo, Christian Brothers, and Dyersburg State. Arkansas State, ranked No. 14 in the NCAA South Central Region, captured the team title with 32 points.
Leading the way was sophomore Frankline Kipruto, who continued his remarkable season by winning the individual championship and breaking his own school record in the 8K.
Kipruto crossed the finish line first in 23:30.7, averaging an incredible 4:43.8 per mile. The victory came against a field loaded with NCAA Division I talent and improved upon the previous school record he established at the Southern Showcase two weeks earlier.
The reigning SSAC Runner of the Week was the only athlete in the field to run under 24 minutes and defeated runners from both Arkansas State and UT Martin en route to the individual crown.
Behind Kipruto, the Firehawks produced one of the deepest team performances in program history.
Senior Spencer Head continued his outstanding season with a sixth-place finish in 24:36.9, while sophomore Martin Van Hamme delivered a major personal-best performance, placing 13th overall in 25:11.2.
Junior Amon Rotich also recorded a significant personal record, crossing the line in 25:34.4 to finish 20th overall. Junior Bruno Villazon rounded out the scoring five with a 21st-place finish in 25:42.5.
Freshman Davide Ambruschi added a strong effort in 25:52.6, while sophomore Luca Neumeister finished in 26:32.3.
The Firehawks' top-five scorers averaged 24:56, the fastest team average ever recorded in program history, showcasing the continued rise of a program that recently earned its first-ever national ranking.
Despite narrowly missing a runner-up finish by four points, UT Southern proved it can compete head-to-head with NCAA Division I competition. The Firehawks placed four runners inside the top 21 and finished within striking distance of UT Martin while competing against a regionally ranked Arkansas State squad.
The performance adds another milestone to an already historic season that has seen UT Southern defeat nationally ranked opponents, set multiple school records, earn conference honors, and climb into the NAIA Top 10.
UT Southern Results
With the postseason approaching, the Firehawks continue to establish themselves as one of the premier NAIA programs in the South and a team capable of challenging NCAA competition.
