PULASKI, Tenn. / McKENZIE, Tenn. – The No. 22 UT Southern Men's Tennis team and UT Southern Women's Tennis team faced a challenging weekend slate against nationally ranked competition, taking on Indiana Wesleyan on Friday before traveling to face Morningside on Sunday.
MEN'S TENNIS
No. 22 UT Southern opened the weekend with a 4-0 victory over Indiana Wesleyan in Pulaski.
In doubles play, Quentin Ferron and Brock Hamilton earned a 6-3 win at No. 2, while Gaspar Audisio and Ryosuke Furuya secured a 6-3 victory at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point.
In singles action, Luis Guilherme Cupertino de Santana picked up a 6-4, 7-6 win at No. 2. Ryosuke Furuya added a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 5, and Gaspar Audisio closed out the match with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6.
On Sunday, the Firehawks battled No. 13 Morningside in McKenzie, falling just short in a 4-3 decision.
Ferron and Hamilton delivered a key 7-5 win at No. 1 doubles, while Audisio and Furuya earned a 6-2 victory at No. 3.
In singles play, Ryosuke Furuya fought through a three-set battle at No. 5, winning 6-7, 6-7, 6-4. Gaspar Audisio added a 6-3, 3-6 victory at No. 6 to keep UT Southern in contention. Brock Hamilton forced momentum early at No. 1 with a 6-4 first-set win before the match turned in Morningside's favor.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
UT Southern Women opened the weekend against No. 21 Indiana Wesleyan, falling 4-0.
Natalia Vergara and Agota Juozapaviciute competed at No. 1 doubles, while Maggie Barnett and Ali Hamilton played at No. 2. Sydney Kentish and Sheyla Zombrano rounded out doubles action.
In singles, Vergara competed at No. 1, while Sheyla Zombrano battled at No. 4. Maggie Barnett pushed her No. 5 singles match to a 5-4 second-set score before it was decided.
On Sunday, UT Southern faced No. 20 Morningside in McKenzie, falling 7-0.
In singles play, Vergara competed at No. 1 and won two games in the opening set before falling 6-2, 6-1. Sofi Rueda played at No. 2 and battled to a 6-4 first set. Ali Hamilton pushed her No. 3 match to a 7-5 second set. Sydney Kentish competed at No. 6 and won four games in the opening set.
The men's team returns home Tuesday, March 3, when the Firehawks host No. 24 Arizona Christian.
