THOMASVILLE, Ga. – No. 24 Tennessee Southern continued its historic start Friday, sweeping Thomas on the road and improving to 23-3 on the season, tying the 2007 squad for the best start through 26 games in program history.
Tennessee Southern 3, Thomas 2 (9 Inn.)
The opener extended beyond regulation, going to extra innings after seven scheduled innings of play.
UT Southern struck first in the second inning when Lauren Pettie reached and Emory Hall followed with an RBI double to put the Firehawks ahead 1-0.
Thomas answered with two runs in the fourth, but the Firehawks responded in the fifth. Alaina Grace King singled and later scored on Carley Cook's sacrifice fly to even the game at 2-2.
The game remained tied into extras. In the ninth, Ella Singletary reached and moved into scoring position before Mikayla McCain delivered the go-ahead RBI single, scoring the eventual game-winning run.
Hall led the offense with two hits, including a double and an RBI. Pettie added two hits, while Bodily collected two hits. McCain finished with a hit and an RBI, and Cook drove in a run.
In the circle, Stella Gilbreath tossed a complete game, allowing just two runs while striking out six.
Tennessee Southern 8, Thomas 0 (5 Inn.)
The Firehawks carried that momentum into the nightcap, using a fast start and steady offense to complete the sweep.
UT Southern opened the scoring in the first as Haley McDaniel reached and later came around to score. In the second, Cook doubled and scored on Hall's RBI single before McDaniel tripled to center to drive in another run and extend the lead to 3-0.
The Firehawks broke it open in the fourth. Lindsey launched a solo home run to start the inning, and later McCain added an RBI single. King followed with an RBI groundout to make it 6-0.
UT Southern added two more in the fifth. Lindsey singled and Hall followed with a double, putting two in scoring position. McDaniel reached on an error, bringing home both runs to push the lead to 8-0.
McDaniel led the offense with three hits, including a triple, while scoring twice and driving in a run. Hall finished with two hits, including a double, an RBI, and scored three times. Lindsey added two hits, including a home run, and an RBI. Cook recorded two hits, including a double, and scored a run. Pettie contributed a hit and scored, while McCain added a hit and an RBI.
In the circle, Singletary earned the win, combining with Boozer on a shutout effort.
Tennessee Southern returns to action Saturday, March 28, traveling to West Point, Ga., to face Point.
