MOBILE, Ala. – No. 19 Tennessee Southern battled in a pair of top-20 matchups Thursday but came up short in both games against No. 14 Mobile.
Mobile 5, Tennessee Southern 3
The Firehawks found themselves in an early hole but chipped away throughout the contest.
Mobile capitalized on miscues in the opening inning to take a 3-0 lead, but UT Southern responded in the third. Lindsey doubled to spark the inning, and Hall followed with an RBI double to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Mobile answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, pushing the lead to 5-1.
The Firehawks continued to fight in the fifth. Lindsey and Hall each singled to start the rally before McDaniel delivered an RBI double to right center. Moments later, Pettie followed with an RBI single to trim the deficit to 5-3.
UT Southern threatened again late, but could not complete the comeback.
Hall led the offense with two hits, including a double, and an RBI. Lindsey added two hits, including a double, while McDaniel recorded a double and an RBI. Pettie drove in a run, and King and Bodily each added a hit.
Mobile 8, Tennessee Southern 6
The nightcap turned into an offensive battle, with both teams trading momentum throughout.
After three scoreless innings, UT Southern broke through in the fourth. Lindsey singled home a run before Hall worked a walk, setting up McDaniel, who laced a two-RBI double to give the Firehawks a 3-1 lead.
Mobile answered with a big inning in the bottom half, scoring five runs to swing the lead.
The Firehawks continued to battle back in the fifth. King and Bodily each singled before McCain delivered an RBI double to cut the deficit to 6-4.
UT Southern added another run in the sixth as McDaniel singled and later scored on Bodily's RBI base hit, trimming the margin to 6-5.
Mobile responded with two runs in the sixth to extend the lead to 8-5.
The Firehawks made one final push in the seventh when Hall launched a solo home run to center, but UT Southern could not close the gap.
McDaniel led the offense with three hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Bodily added two hits and an RBI, while King recorded a hit and reached base multiple times. McCain finished with a double and an RBI. Lindsey contributed a hit and an RBI, and Hall added a home run with an RBI.
Tennessee Southern returns to action Friday for a conference twin bill at No. 16 William Carey.
