Firehawks Rally Late in Series Opener

UT Southern Falls in Tight Contest at No. 15 William Carey

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Tennessee Southern opened its Southern States Athletic Conference weekend series against No. 15 William Carey on Thursday evening, falling 6–5 in a tightly contested matchup.

The Firehawks struck first in the second inning as Devin Thrain launched a solo home run down the left-field line to give Tennessee Southern a 1–0 lead.

William Carey responded in the third, capitalizing on a string of hits to plate five runs and take control of the game.

The Firehawks continued to battle and cut into the deficit in the sixth. Reagan Tomlin singled and Gage Beckner worked a walk before Thrain delivered again, ripping an RBI double down the left-field line. Beckner later scored on a wild pitch to trim the deficit to 6–3.

On the mound, Jay Davis worked through six innings, keeping the Firehawks within reach after the big third inning.

Tennessee Southern made one final push in the ninth. Thrain singled to start the inning and Masato Mizumori followed with a walk. Carson Foote then delivered a clutch two-run double to right-center, bringing the Firehawks within one at 6–5. However, the comeback fell just short as the final two outs were recorded.

Thrain led the Firehawks with a perfect 4-for-4 performance, including a home run, a double, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Foote added a double and two RBIs, while Tomlin recorded a hit and scored a run. Beckner scored a run and reached base with a walk, and Mizumori reached base twice and scored once. Zac Wilson added a hit, and Baron Cribbs contributed on the basepaths.

Blake Medley provided two scoreless innings of relief, striking out three to keep Tennessee Southern within striking distance late.

Tennessee Southern continues the series with a twin bill to close out the weekend against No. 15 William Carey.
