HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Tennessee Southern opened strong but could not hold off a mid-game surge, falling 11–4 to the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) on Tuesday evening at Charger Park.
The Firehawks wasted no time getting on the board in the first. Evan Nelson worked a leadoff walk and Anthony Pastrana followed with a free pass before Cooper Phillips lifted a sacrifice fly to bring Nelson home for a 1–0 lead.
UAH answered with two runs in the bottom half, but Tennessee Southern evened the game in the second. Carson Foote doubled down the right-field line and later scored on an RBI single from Masato Mizumori to tie the game at 2–2.
The Firehawks regained the lead in the third. Zac Wilson singled, and Phillips delivered again with a triple down the right-field line to plate Wilson and give Tennessee Southern a 3–2 edge.
After the University of Alabama in Huntsville tied the game in the fourth, Tennessee Southern answered once more in the fifth. Pastrana ripped a triple to right and Phillips followed with an RBI single to push the Firehawks back in front at 4–3.
UAH responded with a decisive six-run fifth inning to take control of the game and added two more in the eighth to extend the margin.
Phillips led the Firehawks offensively, going 2-for-3 with a triple, three RBIs, and a sacrifice fly. Pastrana added two hits, including a triple, drew two walks, and scored a run while also swiping a base. Nelson reached base twice and scored a run, while Wilson recorded a hit and scored once.
Foote added a double and scored a run, and Mizumori finished with a hit and an RBI. Devin Thrain and Gage Beckner each contributed a hit, and Jake Tegler added a pinch-hit single late.
On the mound, Barrett Brown worked 3.2 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) while striking out three. The Firehawks used a bullpen-by-committee approach the rest of the way.
Tennessee Southern returns to action Friday, returning to the "Bob" to host Thomas University in a Southern States Athletic Conference weekend series.
