No. 19 Firehawks Drop Nonconference Twin Bill at Cumberland

UT Southern Drop Midweek Nonconference Games

LEBANON, Tenn. – No. 19 Tennessee Southern dropped a nonconference twin bill on the road Wednesday, falling in a pair of games at Cumberland.

Cumberland 3, Tennessee Southern 2

The Firehawks found themselves trailing early but worked back into the game behind timely hitting.

Cumberland struck for three runs in the first two innings, but UT Southern responded in the third. Pettie singled to start the inning and later scored as Lindsey delivered an RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-1.

The Firehawks continued to apply pressure in the fourth. Cook singled and later came around to score on McDaniel's RBI single, trimming the margin to 3-2.

UT Southern had opportunities late, including a leadoff double from Hall in the seventh that put the tying run in scoring position, but the Firehawks were unable to bring her home.

Lindsey led the offense with two hits and an RBI, while Pettie added two hits and scored a run. McDaniel recorded a hit and an RBI, and Hall added a double. Cook also contributed a hit.

In the circle, Singletary and Harris combined to hold Cumberland scoreless over the final four innings.

The nightcap saw the Firehawks strike first before Cumberland answered and pulled away.

UT Southern took the lead in the second inning. King singled and McCain followed with a double to put runners in scoring position. Pettie reached on an error, allowing King to score and give the Firehawks a 1-0 advantage.

Cumberland answered in the bottom half and added single runs in the third, fourth, and sixth innings to take control.

McCain led the offense with two hits, including a double, while King added a hit and scored the Firehawks' lone run. Pettie reached base and drove in a run, and Mosley drew a pair of walks.

In the circle, Gilbreath went the distance, striking out one.

Tennessee Southern returns to action Saturday, April 11, traveling to Blue Mountain Christian for an SSAC twin bill.
