PULASKI, Tenn. – University of Tennessee Southern Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics and Head Flag Football Coach Brandie Paul has announced the hiring of assistant coach, Johanna DeGuzman.
"We are thrilled to bring on an assistant coach of Coach Joh's caliber," said Coach Paul. "She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that will help elevate our program immediately."
DeGuzman brings more than 14 years of competitive flag football experience to the program, with a proven record of success at both the national and international levels. Throughout her playing career, she has earned numerous championships and established herself as a respected leader on and off the field.
DeGuzman is a two-time athlete for the Philippines National Flag Football Team, where she also served as Defensive Captain. Her international playing experience has provided her with a deep understanding of the game, along with a strong emphasis on discipline, teamwork, strategy, and player development.
In addition to her accomplishments as an athlete, DeGuzman has developed an impressive coaching résumé. She served as Assistant Head Coach at Smyrna High School during the 2024–25 and 2025–26 seasons and currently brings her defensive expertise to the Tennessee Vultures Boys 7v7 program as Defensive Coordinator. She has also served as Head Coach of the "Watch This" Youth Flag Football Travel Team, working with young athletes to develop their skills, confidence, and understanding of the game.
DeGuzman holds degrees from the University of Maryland, graduating in 2016, and Southern New Hampshire University, graduating in 2020.
With a combination of elite competitive experience, international representation, championship success, and a passion for developing young athletes, DeGuzman brings a unique perspective to the growth of flag football and is committed to helping athletes reach their full potential both on and off the field.
