BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The University of Tennessee Southern volleyball team closed out play at the Vette City Classic on Saturday by splitting a pair of matches, falling to Campbellsville University before rallying for a four-set victory over Union Commonwealth University.
The Firehawks concluded the tournament with a 2-2 record, improving to 3-4 overall on the young season.
Campbellsville 3, UT Southern 0
UT Southern opened the day against a Campbellsville squad that entered the match with a 8-2 record. The Tigers took the first two sets before the Firehawks mounted a late push in the third, ultimately falling by scores of 25-10, 25-17, and 25-23.
Olivia Ward and Amree Patterson paced the Firehawks offensively. Ward recorded eight kills while hitting .375, while Patterson added six kills on an impressive .545 attacking percentage and totaled six blocks.
Ashley Cope led the defensive effort with 17 digs, while Ashlee Kraft added 12 digs and two service aces.
UT Southern 3, Union Commonwealth 1
The Firehawks responded in the afternoon match, bouncing back from a first-set loss to defeat Union Commonwealth 23-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-15.
After dropping a tightly contested opening set, UT Southern settled in and controlled much of the remainder of the match, limiting Union Commonwealth to a .108 hitting percentage while posting a .224 mark of its own.
Meloise Aureyre led the Firehawk attack with 17 kills while hitting .424 and adding 14 digs. Ashlee Kraft recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 15 digs, while Olivia Ward contributed six kills and three service aces.
Amree Patterson continued her strong weekend at the net, totaling seven kills and 10 blocks, including four solo rejections. Jelleny Mallozzi and Emma Harding combined for 42 assists, while Ashley Cope added 10 digs in the victory.

UT Southern returns home on Tuesday, Sept. 1, to host Fisk University at the Curry Athletic Complex. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. as the Firehawks look to build on their 3-4 start and carry momentum from their four-set victory over Union Commonwealth into their home opener.
