WEST POINT, Ga. – The UT Southern men's soccer team opened Southern States Athletic Conference play with an emphatic performance on Thursday night, defeating Point University 4-0 at River Bowl Stadium.
The Firehawks improved to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play, continuing their best start of the season while recording their second shutout victory of the year.
UT Southern wasted little time taking control of the match. Christian Sentz continued his red-hot stretch by scoring a pair of goals within the opening nine minutes, giving the Firehawks an early two-goal cushion. Both goals were set up by Lorick Gustave, whose playmaking ability helped UT Southern seize momentum from the opening whistle.
The Firehawks carried the 2-0 lead into halftime after limiting Point's opportunities and controlling much of the play in the attacking third.
UT Southern continued to press after the break and put the match away midway through the second half. In the 60th minute, Luke McMahon found the back of the net off a setup from Daquan Duhaney to stretch the advantage to 3-0. The goal marked McMahon's first score of the season.
Less than six minutes later, David Danquah added to the Firehawk lead with his third goal of the season, extending the margin to 4-0 and capping the scoring for the evening.
The Firehawk defense once again delivered a strong performance. Goalkeeper William McGinn recorded two saves and secured his second shutout of the season as UT Southern held Point to just two shots on goal throughout the match.
UT Southern finished with advantages in shots (13-8), shots on goal (8-2), and corner kicks (4-1), controlling the pace for much of the contest and earning a statement victory in the team's first conference match of the season.
Sentz led the attack with two goals, while Gustave recorded a pair of assists. Duhaney added an assist, and Danquah continued his productive start to the year with another goal.
