HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Tennessee Southern men's cross country team continued its impressive start to the 2026 season Friday at the Southern Showcase, measuring itself against one of the deepest and most competitive fields in the nation at the John Hunt Cross Country Course.
The Firehawks finished 16th in a 29-team field that included nationally recognized NCAA Division I programs Alabama, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Auburn, App State, Temple, Belmont, Arkansas State, and Chattanooga, along with several top Division II and NAIA programs.
UT Southern's performance was highlighted by a head-to-head victory over NAIA No. 4 Milligan, one of the nation's premier NAIA programs and a perennial contender on the national stage. The Firehawks also finished ahead of Chattanooga and several other NCAA Division I programs, further demonstrating the program's continued rise against top-level competition.
Leading the way was sophomore Frankline Kipruto, who turned in a historic performance for the Firehawks. The Eldoret, Kenya native finished 17th overall in a field of more than 300 runners while setting a new UT Southern men's cross country program record in the 8K with a time of 24:20.3. His average mile pace of 4:53.8 placed him among a group of runners dominated by athletes from Power Four and nationally recognized NCAA programs.
Kipruto's record-breaking effort continued a remarkable opening month of the season after he earned SSAC Runner of the Week honors following his performance at the JSU Foothills Invitational.
Senior Spencer Head provided another outstanding performance for the Firehawks, finishing 62nd overall with a time of 25:15.0. Head averaged 5:04.7 per mile and gave UT Southern two runners among the top 65 finishers in one of the largest races the team will face this season.
Sophomore Martin Van Hamme continued his strong start to the year, placing 100th overall in 25:37.5. Junior Amon Rotich followed in 173rd with a time of 26:24.5, while freshman Davide Ambruschi rounded out the scoring lineup in 193rd place at 26:39.1 during his first collegiate 8K competition.
Sophomore Luca Neumeister crossed the finish line in 27:12.9, while Jacob Casteel (27:52.5), Canon Lett (28:04.7), Mattia Guidi (28:12.1), and Cameron Stovall (30:34.0) completed the Firehawks' lineup.
The performance adds another impressive result to the Firehawks' early-season résumé. Two weeks after leading all NAIA programs at the JSU Foothills Invitational, UT Southern once again proved it can compete with some of the top teams in the region while earning a significant victory over a nationally ranked opponent.
