OAKVILLE, Ala. – Fresh off earning the program's first-ever NAIA Top 10 ranking, the No. 10 University of Tennessee Southern men's cross country team added another impressive performance to its résumé Saturday, capturing both the team and individual titles at the Firehawk Invitational hosted at Oakville Indian Mounds Park.
The Firehawks scored just 20 points and placed seven runners inside the top 10 to comfortably win the team championship. William Carey finished second with 57 points, followed by Faulkner (59), Northwest-Shoals CC (107), and Miles (138).
UT Southern competed without two of its top runners, as Frankline Kipruto and Amon Rotich were rested following their standout performances at the Southern Showcase earlier this month.
Even without those key contributors, the Firehawks showcased their depth and talent from top to bottom.
Senior Spencer Head claimed the individual title, crossing the finish line first in 25:13.8 while averaging 5:04.5 per mile. Head led a dominant Firehawk effort that saw UT Southern take the top two spots and five of the top seven positions in the race.
Junior Bruno Villazon turned in one of the most impressive performances of the day, finishing runner-up in his season debut with a time of 25:23.0 and a 5:06.3 mile pace. After battling injury setbacks, Villazon returned to competition in outstanding form and immediately established himself as a key contributor for the nationally ranked Firehawks.
Sophomore Martin Van Hamme continued his strong season with a fourth-place finish in 26:10.0, while sophomore Luca Neumeister placed sixth in 26:22.9.
Freshman Davide Ambruschi rounded out the scoring five with a seventh-place finish and a time of 26:41.5.
Jacob Casteel and Mattia Guidi completed the Firehawks' top-seven lineup, placing ninth and tenth overall, respectively.
The race was contested under ideal conditions, resulting in fast times throughout the field. For UT Southern, the event also served as an opportunity to continue building momentum heading into next week's competition.
The Firehawks enter the upcoming weekend after one of the most successful stretches in program history. At the Southern Showcase, UT Southern defeated then-No. 4 Milligan while finishing ahead of UT Chattanooga and multiple NCAA Division I programs. Kipruto highlighted the day by setting a new school record in the 8K with a time of 24:20.3, helping propel the Firehawks into the NAIA Top 10 for the first time in program history.
With another strong performance in Oakville, UT Southern now turns its attention toward an even tougher challenge at the CBU Invitational, where the Firehawks will square off against NCAA Division I programs including Arkansas State and UT Martin.
