Baseball: MMC Tramples Toppers with 12-4 Win in Series Opener

PULASKI, Tenn. (3/24) - MMC baseball took a 12 day hiatus from Sam Davis Park for two road series with Bethel University and Bryan College, but returned with a 12-4 win over TSAC opponent Blue Mountain College on Thursday afternoon. Jerry McMurtry (Senior/Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) notched the victory, evening his season record to 4-4, as Cody Pomeroy (Senior/Pegram, Tenn.) drove in four runs off a homerun and a double on the day. The RedHawks, who currently sit atop the TranSouth at 8-2, have gone 9-5 through the month of March.

Both Drew Donnelly (Senior/Nashville, Tenn.) and Travis Garcia (Senior/Nolensville, Tenn.) had 3-for-5 days at the plate, as Donnelly was responsible for knocking in two scores. The MMC offense combined for 14 total hits against the Topper pitching staff, while McMurtry worked from the mound for 7.2 innings, fanning six batters and allowing just six hits.

MMC took the lead early on, striking in the bottom of the first with a four spot that was capped by Pomeroy's three-run long ball. BMC added two of their own in the fourth, but MMC answered with one in the bottom of the frame, two in the sixth, and another in the seventh for an 8-2 cushion.

In the top of the eighth, two bases loaded walks with two outs allowed Blue Mountain to cut the deficit to 8-4, but when McMurtry gave way, Matt Fiser (Senior/Kingston Springs, Tenn.) worked out of the jam with forcing an inning-ending fly ball.

Another four runs in the bottom half of the fourth secured the 12-4 lead for MMC, one that would hold through the ninth as Brock Glass (Senior/Loretto, Tenn.) closed the contest.

The two teams will complete the series with a doubleheader on Friday afternoon beginning at 1pm.
