McKENZIE, Tenn. – After suffering their first two-match losing streak of the season, Martin Methodist bounced back in a big way with a dominating 3-0 win at No. 11 Bethel (Tenn.) University Wednesday afternoon, snapping a historic Wildcats win streak in the process.
In a match played with the intensity of a national tournament contest, the RedHawks struck just 10 minutes into the match when Juan Madrigal's shot deflected off a Wildcats defender and slipped past goalkeeper Christopher Baker.
The RedHawks continued to add offensive pressure, eventually adding another first-half goal from Madrigal, who floated a shot from just beyond the box into the upper left corner to give the RedHawks a 2-0 edge in the match's 32nd minute.
After halftime, the RedHawks offensive efforts slowly began to shift toward defensive pressure as the Wildcats began to press forward to potentially claw their way back into the match. Solid efforts along the backline from Daniel Dunleavy, Juan Salazar, Shane Powell and Martin Campbell, however, would stymie the attack of the Wildcats, who outshot the RedHawks 5-3 over the match's final 45 minutes.
Then, with just seconds to play, the RedHawks would spring for one final piece of counter-attack when Amaury Barritault found a streaking Jermaine Steele down the left wing. After freezing a defender with a fake shot, Steele rifled home a right-footed shot to clinch the victory.
"It was a great way to finish the game," RedHawks head coach Gerry Cleary said. "This was a great win for us against one of the top teams in the country. Our lads worked hard and they got what they deserved."
As a team, the RedHawks (8-3-0, 2-0 TranSouth) were outshot (10-8) and took six fewer corner kicks (6-1) than the Wildcats, but managed to grab the win with timely defense.
"There was added focus defensively," Cleary said. "We asked our guys to commit more this afternoon. We needed more guys playing better and they stepped it up."
RedHawks goalkeeper Stephen Lunney made four saves – all in the first half – to record his eighth victory and seven clean sheet of the season.
Baker made one save against four shots on goal in the loss for the Wildcats (6-2-1, 2-1), who saw their 29-match conference unbeaten streak snapped.
Prior to Wednesday's match, the Wildcats had not suffered a conference loss since a 3-0 loss to the RedHawks on Sept. 24, 2008. The loss marked the first home conference loss for the Wildcats since the 2007 season.
The RedHawks return to action with another conference matchup at Freed-Hardeman on Oct. 16. The RedHawks defeated the Lions 1-0 in Pulaski on Sept. 25.
