Box Score PULASKI, Tenn. - Martin Methodist baseball opened their conference season on the road this weekend, falling twice on Saturday to Freed-Hardeman University. MMC dropped the first game 5-2, and then just fell short in the second game of the doubleheader with a 5-4 loss.
Steven Dodson suffered the first game loss, allowing five runs on five hits in 5.1 innings of work, as MMC recorded seven hits, but couldn't string together enough runs. Rob Holley led from the plate, checking in at 2-for-3 with an RBI, as both he and Matt Franklin doubled in the game.
The RedHawks jumped on the board first in the second game with a three-spot in the first innings. Franklin led off with a walk, as Clint Gobbell and Matt Thomas both drew a hit by pitch to juice the bases. Nick Flanagan and Ryan Jett both drew free bases to play Franklin and Gobbell, forcing an early FHU pitching change. Josh Swipas walked with two outs to score Flanagan for a 3-0 lead.
Freed used a second inning homerun to cut the deficit to 3-2, and then took over in the fourth with two runs to lead over MMC 4-3. After the Lions tacked on another in the fifth, the RedHawks plated one in the sixth as Jett doubled and scored on a Swipas groundout, but MMC could not find enough runs to overcome the 5-4 score. Josh Brown suffered the loss on the mound.
MMC finishes the series on Sunday at noon with a nine-inning game in Henderson. The RedHawks are 2-0 in TranSouth play, 8-11 overall.
